The Delavan-Darien High School boys basketball team played one of its best games of the season last week in an 81-72 upset over Wilmot and one of the worst halves of the season, in a 69-35 loss to Lake Geneva Badger.
“We are essentially a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde affair,” D-DHS head coach Bob Beighton said. “If the unselfish team shows up, we are OK. If the other half appears, we play like we are trying the game for the first time.”
On Jan. 27 the Comets did everything right in their Southern Lakes Conference win over the third-place Panthers.
The Comets started out with the 25-20 first-quarter lead and held on to a one-point advantage at halftime, going up 39-38.
Rebounding and assists were the key in the second half and the Comets continued to add to their lead when they outscored the Panthers 18-15 in the third quarter and pulled ahead, 57-53.
In the final quarter of play, the Comets continued their offensive assault, putting 24 points on the board on the way to their 81-72 win.
William Brown had a career-high 37 points to pace the Comets and added five assists and two steals.
Lucas DeLara finished with a double-double, scoring 20 points and adding 10 rebounds.
Jesse Collins added 11 points, and Isiah Ramos and Ethan Cesarz finished with five points each.
Ramos added four assists, and Cesarz added eight rebounds and three assists.
Friday night in Lake Geneva, the Comets picked up where they left off from Tuesday night in the first half against the conference-leading Badgers and found themselves down only two at halftime.
Badger had the 27-25 lead going into the third quarter and then the Comets fell apart, watching as Badger went on a 29-0 run in the third quarter and carried that run into the fourth quarter. It was a 38-0 run before the Comets finally scored, making it 65-27.
Badger went on for the 69-35 win, keeping Lake Geneva in first in the conference.
Brown had nine points, DeLara and Isiah Ramos had seven each, and Isaac Ramos added six.
The Comets will try for their third conference win when they host Waterford tonight at 7 p.m. Tuesday the Comets travel to Westosha Central for a 7:15 p.m. game.
