The Delavan-Darien High School boys basketball team had its hands full last week with two Southern Lakes Conference rivals – Lake Geneva Badger and Wilmot.
Turnovers and lack of rebounding hurt the Comets (2-4, 0-2) in their 72-58 loss to Badger and 73-68 loss to Wilmot.
“Our turnovers continue to hurt us,” D-DHS head coach Bob Beighton said. “We continue to make poor decisions with the ball.”
“Some of this is poor spacing, and some of it is not seeing the floor,” he said.
The Comets hosted Badger on Dec. 9 and were down only two points heading into the second quarter, with Badger having the 18-16 edge.
In the middle two quarters, the Comets lost control and were outscored 24-10 in the second quarter and 21-13 in the third quarter, putting Badger up 63-39 at the end of the third quarter.
The Comets picked away at the lead in the fourth quarter, and went on to outscore Badger 19-9 but it wasn’t enough as the Comets fell, 72-58.
William Brown paced the Comets with 18 points and three assists.
Lucas DeLara added 13 points, Isaac Ramos had eight points, Jayce Crull had six points, and Ethan Cesarz added five.
Cesarz finished with nine rebounds to lead the Comets.
Friday the Comets hosted Wilmot and this time it was the first quarter that hurt them when they were outscored, 22-9.
“We have started to play longer stretches of decent basketball, but we are still far from four quarters of solid play,” Beighton said.
The Comets then went on to outscore the Panthers in the last three quarters, but could never overcome the first quarter and lost, 73-68.
Isiah Ramos had 31 points and seven rebounds and DeLara had 17 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Cesarz finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
The Comets host Waterford Friday night in a double header with the D-DHS girls basketball team. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
