Baseball upsets Wilmot one game, is shut out the next

      Finishing its regular Southern Lakes Conference season, the Delavan-Darien High School baseball team went 1-1 against Wilmot last week to finish the season at 11-11 overall and 6-8 in the conference.

      On May 27 the Comets upset the Panthers, who are ranked third in the state, beating them 5-4.

      Both teams were scoreless in the first inning, and then in the bottom of the second Jacob Benzing started the inning off with a single and scored later on a single by Ethan Cesarz, putting the Comets up 1-0.

      Great pitching by Micah Heath held the Panthers scoreless through the second, third and fourth innings, and in the bottom of the fourth Benzing and Cesarz did it again for the Comets.

      After one out, Heath reached base on a walk, and then Benzing reached on a fielder’s choice.  After a single by Sam Seitz advanced Benzing, Cesarz got his second single of the game, scoring Benzing and making it a 2-0 game.

      The Panthers finally scored in the fifth inning, putting two runs on the board to tie the game up at 2-2.

      The Comets took that lead back in the bottom of the fifth when Isiah Ramos, Benzing, Seitz and Cesarz all got singles for the Comets, scoring three more runs and making it 5-2.

      Wilmot added one more run in the top of the sixth inning and one more run in the top of the seventh, making it 5-4, but the Comet defense held on to preserve the 5-4 upset victory.

      Heath pitched the complete game, striking out nine and walking only two.

      The Comets were led offensively by Cesarz who was 3-for-3.

      Isiah Ramos, Benzing and Seitz each had two hits.

      Thursday in Wilmot it was a different ball game with Wilmot getting the 10-0 win.

      The Comets had only one hit in the game, a single by Isiah Ramos.

      Seitz took the loss for the Comets, striking out two and walking two.

      The Comets started Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association rRegional play on Wednesday night against East Troy.

      The winner of that game will advance to play Jefferson Friday night.
