The Delavan-Darien High School girls basketball team’s season ended at the hands of Milton, despite the Comets controlling the game much of the way.
Playing in opening action of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association regional round, the Comets lost 47-32.
“Foul trouble and too many missed opportunists inside the paint on offense,” D-DHS head coach Hank Johnson said about why his team couldn’t hold on for the win.
The Comets jumped out to an early lead after Macie Hill scored and made a free throw and Kylie Collins hit a three-point basket to put the Comets ahead 6-0.
After two baskets by Milton, Hill scored again on a great pass from Claudia Nieuwenhuis making it 8-4 before Hannah Timmerman converted two free throws to put the Comets up 10-4 at the end of the first quarter of action.
Collins scored first for the Comets in the second quarter, building their lead to 12-4, and Jennah Speth made one of two free throws making it 13-4.
The Comet defense held Milton to only four points until the three-minute mark of the second quarter when the Red Hawks started to run a press, causing Comet turnovers, which resulted in Milton pulling within three points at 13-10.
With 18 seconds left in the first half, Collins hit her second three-point basket of the game, putting the Comets up 16-10 at halftime.
Milton scored first in the third quarter but the Timmerman and Collins scored, putting the Comets up 20-12. Timmerman scored again for the Comets, and after two free throws by Megan Butke and two Milton baskets, the score was 24-16.
The game turned to Milton’s favor after that and Milton went on a 10-2 run to end the third quarter and tied the game up at 26-26 heading into the final quarter of play.
With foul trouble plaguing them and the Milton offense picking up, the Comets were outscored 21-6 in the fourth quarter and their season ended with a 47-32 loss.
Collins had 13 points, Timmerman added six and Speth and Hill had five points each.
Timmerman added seven rebounds, and Speth had six.
