Comets lose to Badger by 10

The Delavan-Darien High School girls’ basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a 37-36 non-conference win over Milton Dec. 10.
In Southern Lakes Conference action, the Comets lost Thursday to Lake Geneva Badger, 49-39.
Against Milton, the Comets (1-4, 0-2) used free-throw shooting to help them to the win.
“We did a good job of hitting clutch free throws at the end of the game,” D-DHS head coach Hank Johnson said.
The Comets made 16 of 29 free-throw attempts. Megan Butke led the Comets, going eight for 11.
At halftime, the Comets had a 20-14 lead over Milton and made it a 29-21 lead at the end of the third quarter before Milton staged a fourth-quarter comeback.
“Milton ended up coming back to take the lead. However, the girls fought hard to get the lead back,” Johnson said.
Milton outscored the Comets 15-8 in the final quarter, but the Comets held on for the one-point win at 37-36.
Butke finished her night with 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Kylie Collins had 14 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Against Lake Geneva Badger both teams started out slow offensively, scoring only four points each in the first quarter.
Badger broke the game open in the second quarter when they outscored the Comets 23-12 to take the 27-16 halftime lead.
The Comets came back in the second half, outscoring Badger 13-7 in the third quarter, cutting the lead to only five at 34-29.
In the fourth quarter, the game got away from the Comets, and Badger went on for the 49-39 win.
“We turned the ball over too much and did not rebound,” Johnson said. “But the girls did a great job coming out of (the) half to bring us within one point after being down 12.”
The Comets were outrebounded 34-19 and turned the ball over 21 times.
Collins had 10 points for the Comets along with four steals, three assists and three rebounds.
Macie Hill added eight points and five rebounds, and Claudia Nieuwenhuis and Kenna Timmerman had six points each.
Timmerman added six rebounds.
The Comets travel to Westosha Central on Friday for a 6 p.m. game, followed by the Comet boys’ team at 7:30 p.m.
