Comets lose to Wilmot, Waterford

The Delavan-Darien High School boys’ basketball team had great moments of basketball last week, offensively and defensively. Unfortunately for the Comets, they weren’t able to put it together for a complete game and they lost twice.
On Dec. 12 the Comets (0-6, 0-4) hosted Wilmot and lost 78-64 and Friday traveled to Waterford where they lost 48-43.
Hosting Wilmot, the Comets were outscored 20-7 in the first quarter.
“Our poor start and lack of energy in the first quarter doomed us – inexcusable at home,” D-DHS head coach Bob Beighton said.
It was a closer second quarter, but the Panthers held on to a 35-21 halftime lead.
The Comets fought back in the second half, making it a closer game than the score reflected, but it wasn’t enough as they went on for the 78-64 loss.
“We need to get a lot more physical and aggressive at both ends,” Beighton said.
John Damrow had 16 points, five rebounds and three assists in the loss.
Jesse Collins added 14 points and seven rebounds, and Isaac Ramos had 13 points.
Friday night in Waterford, the Comets picked up the intensity of their game and nearly came away with the win against the Southern Lakes Conference-leading Wolverines.
“We played our best half of basketball defensively against Waterford in the first half,” Beighton said. “Unfortunately, we did not do enough in the second half on the boards and in denying penetration to get the win.”
It took three minutes for either team to score in the game, and finally Isiah Ramos hit a three-point basket to start the Comets off with the 3-0 lead.
After the Wolverines tied it up at 3-3, Damrow scored for the Comets making it 5-4.
Waterford ended the quarter with a basket and took the 6-5 lead.
It was a crazy second quarter of action that saw the Comets build a 15-8 lead after baskets by Damrow, Isaac Ramos, Isiah Ramos and William Brown.
After a Damrow steal and Brown basket, the Comets had built that lead to nine at 17-8.
The Comets were held scoreless the rest of the quarter, and, with emotions running high, the Comets were charged with two technical fouls, and at halftime the Wolverines made it a five-point game at 17-12.
Waterford scored first in the third quarter before Isaac Ramos hit a three-point basket, making it 20-14. The Wolverines then went on a 6-0 run in the next two minutes, tying things up at 20-20.
Ramos hit his second three-pointer of the quarter, putting the Comets up 23-20 and followed that up with a basket after a Wolverine score, making it 25-22.
The game continued to be a battle back and forth, and after back-to-back baskets by Ethan Cesarz, the Comets went up 29-27.
Before the quarter was over though, the Wolverines took the lead back at 30-29 to end the quarter.
The battle for their first win continued into the fourth quarter, but the Wolverines never gave up the lead and went on for the 48-43 win.
“We gave ourselves a chance to win it at the end with some stops when we needed them and had a great look to win it,” Beighton said. “At some point those shots will fall.”
Isaac Ramos paced the Comets with 13 points, and Isiah Ramos added nine. Brown had seven points.
The Comets travel to Westosha Central on Friday for a double header with the girls’ team. Game time is set for 7:15 p.m.
