The first win of the season continues to elude the Delavan-Darien High School boys’ basketball team, and losses continue to be by just a few points.
The Comets fell 67-60 to Lake Geneva Badger to go to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the Southern Lakes Conference.
The Comets had the lead most of the game until the fourth quarter when the Badgers outscored them, 21-12.
With this being the fourth game the Comets have lost by seven points or less, D-DHS head coach Bob Beighton knows what his team needs to work on.
“We have to improve defensively. It is as simple as that,” Beighton said. “We are giving up too much straight-line penetration, too many second-chance points and too many transition baskets. We are not closing out, talking or helping well. Until we fix those things, we are going to struggle.”
Badger had a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter of action, going up 17-16.
The Comets took a slim three-point lead at halftime after outscoring the Badgers 15-11 in the second quarter to go up 31-28.
Things started to unravel for the Comets in the second half, with missed shots and foul trouble plaguing them, and Badger went on to outscore the Comets 18-17 in the third quarter and 21-12 in the final quarter for the 67-60 win.
Jesse Collins paced the Comets with 20 points.
John Damrow added 14 points and six rebounds, and Isiah Ramos had 13 points, two steals and two assists.
The Comets travel to Waterford Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. game and Tuesday will head to Milton for a non-conference match-up starting at 7:30 p.m.
