The Delavan-Darien High School baseball team started its season off right when it beat Whitewater 20-6 on Saturday in non-conference action.
Looking to improve on their 13-10 record last year – 7-7 in the Southern Lakes Conference – the Comets collected 15 hits, while allowing only nine hits to get the lopsided victory.
The Comets had a big first inning when Isiah Ramos started the game off with a triple and scored on a single by Scott Buhler. Isaac Ramos reached base after getting a hit and Brendan Huber walked, scoring Buhler.
Isaac Ramos scored on a sacrifice by Micah Heath and after Bryce Davis walked, Devin Salas hit a sacrifice to score Huber.
The inning continued when Orin Jenks singled, Nick Avampato hit a double, and Isiah Ramos and Scott Buhler collected their second hits of the inning before the damage was done and the Comets had an 8-0 lead.
The Comet defense held Whitewater scoreless in the bottom of the first and, after the offense added a run in the second inning on a single by Davis and double by Jenks, the Comets went up 9-0.
The Comets went on to score one run in the third inning, five in the fourth inning and five in the fifth to get the 20-6 victory in the fifth inning.
Isiah Ramos and Buhler both went 4-for-5 in the game and Davis and Jenks were 2-for-3.
Huber was 2-for-4 and got the win for the Comets from the mound, pitching four innings and striking out two while walking one.
Heath came in and got the save, pitching one inning and striking out two while walking two.
The Comets will travel to Wilmot tonight for a 4:30 p.m. Southern Lakes Conference game and Tuesday will host Burlington in a 4:30 p.m. game at Veteran’s Park in Delavan.
