With a win at the Nelson-Daniels Classic held at UW-Whitewater Friday, the Whitewater High School boys track and field team got off to a great start this season.
The Whippet boys tallied 45 points to edge East Troy by three points in the 27-team field.
The girls team placed 11th out of 25 teams with 18 points.
Although they won the event, the Whippet boys did not get a win in any specific event. They did have five third-place finishes, though, plus one fourth, one fifth, one sixth, one seventh and one eighth.
Earning third-place finishes were Andy Cooper in the high jump (six feet, two inches), Cody Fiedler in the pole vault (12-00), Brett Harms in the 1,600-meter run (4:43.03), Jack Bullis in the 55-meter hurdles (8.27 seconds), and the 4-by-400-meter relay team (3:42.36). That relay team was comprised of Joe Bullis, Austin Banda, Cooper and Jack Bullis.
Anthony Juoni took fourth in the triple jump (41-01.5) and Keagan Stonewerth fifth in the long jump (18-01.75).
The 4-by-800 relay tam was sixth (9:15.86), Sung-Min Kang seventh in the shot put (44-04), and the 4-by-200 relay team eighth (1:41.90).
“What was most impressive was that we scored in so many events (10), making this a true team effort,” head coach John Houwers said.
Kailey Reynolds led the Whippet girls. She was fourth in both the pole vault (8-06) and the 55-meter dash (7.60 seconds).
The girls 4-by-200 meter relay team of Dani Dolan, Autumn Bultman, Grace Tisdale and Reynolds, took third with a time of 1:54.69.
The only other Whippet girl who scored points for the team was Dolan, with a seventh-place finish in the long jump (14-07).
“The meet was a great start to the season,” Houwers said. “Many other athletes had great performances, some competing in their first ever track and field meet.”
Schedule
The Whippet squads will take on Fort Atkinson in a dual meet on Tuesday, March 26, at the UW-Whitewater Fieldhouse, starting at 4:30 p.m.
