The Delavan-Darien High School girls’ basketball team picked up its first Southern Lakes Conference win Jan. 24, beating Westosha Central 57-42.
“It was a great team win,” D-DHS head coach Hank Johnson said. “These girls have not quit at all this season and they could have, but we are proud of the way they are playing right now.”
Earlier in the week, the Comets fell in a non-conference game to Racine Prairie 53-41.
Racine outscored the Comets in every quarter but the third, when the Comets had the 13-10 advantage.
Kylie Collins led the Comets with 16 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Amanda McLernon added 10 points and four steals, and Chloe Nieuwenhuis had six points.
On Jan. 24, the Comets hosted the Falcons and used big second and third quarters to get the 57-42 victory.
“I thought the girls did a great job Thursday night,” Johnson said. “We started the game off slow on offense but exploded to outscore them 38-10 in the second and third quarters.”
The Comets were outscored 13-11 in the first quarter before outscoring the Falcons 16-2 in the second quarter to take a 27-15 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, the Comets put 22 points on the board while the defense held the Falcons to eight to make it 49-23.
Johnson was able to get the Comet bench some good play time in the fourth quarter, and in the end the Comets went on for the 57-42 victory.
McLernon led the Comets with 15 points and four steals.
Collins added 13 points, and Nieuwenhuis had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Shelbie Greidanus had six points and five rebounds.
