Comets lose to Waterford, Union Grove

Despite losing two of three Southern Lakes Conference games in five days, the Delavan-Darien High School boys’ basketball team had one of its best weeks of basketball.

first conference win.
“There was no doubt we could win all three of the games,” head coach Bob Beighton said. “The biggest difference on Friday was we found a way as a team to execute on each end.”
The Comets hosted Elkhorn Friday night and won 48-40.
On Jan. 22, the Comets lost to Union Grove 60-55 and Jan. 24 lost to Waterford 59-45.
“Against Waterford and Union Grove we had leads at the half and could not finish,” Beighton said. “Our defensive and offensive execution in both those second halves got away from what had been successful in the beginning.”
Hosting Union Grove, the Comets had a 31-30 halftime lead after outscoring the Broncos 20-12 in the first quarter. The game got away from the Comets in the third quarter when the Broncos went up 10 after outscoring the Comets 17-6 to take the 47-37 lead.
The Comets battled back in the fourth quarter and put 18 points on the board, but it wasn’t enough as the Broncos went on for the 60-55 win.
The Ramos twins, Isaac and Isiah, led the Comets with 13 points each.
Isaac Ramos added three rebounds and two steals.
Stephen Rodriguez added 11 points and three rebounds, and Danny Supernaw had seven points and three rebounds.
On Jan. 24, the Comets were again on their home court and, as was the case against the Broncos, had the one-point halftime lead over Waterford at 21-20.
The third quarter hurt the Comets again as the Wolverines outscored them 22-8 to take a 42-29 lead.
The Comets tried to rally in the fourth quarter and outscored Waterford 16-8, but lost 59-45.
John Damrow paced the Comets with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Jesse Collins and Isiah Ramos added 11 points each, and Collins had eight rebounds.
Rodriguez added seven points and two assists.
Friday night the Comets hosted their conference rival Elkhorn and after a slow first half start, came together in the second half to put the Elks away and get their first conference win.
Elkhorn had a 24-15 halftime lead after the Comets fell flat offensively in the first half.
After regrouping at halftime, the Comets outscored Elkhorn by 17 points in the second half to get the 48-40 win.
Beighton said it was a total team effort Friday night and good offensive execution in the second half that contributed to their win.
“John Damrow had a strong second half as did Jesse Collins. Both found their confidence,” Beighton said.
Collins had 13 second-half points, and Damrow added nine.
Supernaw and Rodriguez were also keys to the win with Rodriguez getting four assists and Supernaw adding two, Beighton said,
“And the game was finished off by getting the ball to Isiah Ramos who went eight for eight from the line in the fourth to seal the deal,” Beighton said.
Isiah Ramos and Collins led the Comets with 14 points each, and Damrow added nine points and six rebounds.
