The Lake Geneva Badger girls’ basketball team lost an opportunity to gain ground in the Southern Lakes Conference with a 58-44 loss at Wilmot on Jan. 29. Wilmot (15-2, 9-1 SLC) remained in first place and third-place Badger failed to gain ground on Waterford (10-8, 9-2).
Wilmot took charge of the game early jumping out to a 24-7 lead after one quarter.
“We did not play well offensively in the first quarter and that carried over to our defense as well,” Coach David Jooss said. “I like how we came back but you need to play four strong quarters to beat them.”
Badger did come back strong outscoring Wilmot 19-7 in the second quarter to trail just 31-26 at the half. Wilmot, however, used another big run to push the lead back up to 43-31 at the end of three.
“The style of play led it to being an up and down game,” Jooss said. “They were able to go on more runs than us and I thought they played more consistently throughout the game than we did.”
Badger played Wilmot evenly in the fourth quarter but needed one more run that never came. Karina Reeves led the Badgers with 15 points. No one else had more than seven (Lily Quinn and Stephanie Espinosa). Kari Clements led Wilmot with 16. Katlyn Eidson added 12.
Badger did beat Westosha Central 51-25 last Friday. Badger (10-7, 7-3 SLC) held the Falcons to two points in the first quarter and then blitzed them with a 27-7 second quarter to lead 36-9 at the half. Badger coasted from there.
Tristan Sproul led the Badgers with 11. Reeves added 10. Madison Stanczyk led Westosha Central (4-13, 3-8) with 11.
Badger hosted Elkhorn (9-9, 6-5) on Tuesday and plays at Waterford next Tuesday.

The Badger boys beat Waukesha South (2-15) on the road in a back and forth game 61-56 on Jan. 29. Badger jumped out to a 19-11 lead after one quarter but Waukesha South fought back in the second to trail 31-28 at the half. Badger surged to a 50-42 lead after three but Waukesha South edged closer by winning the fourth quarter 14-11.
Lincoln Wieseman led Badger with 20 points. Jake Kozlowski added 15.Trent Prater and Anthony Johnson led South with 13 each.
Badger (7-11, 2-8) got their second SLC win over Delavan-Darien, this time 53-33 last Thursday at home. Badger jumped out to a 17-6 lead after one and led 30-19 at the half. D-DHS (6-12, 1-9) stayed within striking distance with an even third quarter, but Badger put it away with a 15-7 fourth quarter.
Kozlowski led Badger with 10 points. Colton Andresen and Ian Weber each added nine. Jesse Collins led the Comets with 14.
The Badgers played Westosha Central (5-13, 3-8) on Tuesday. Badgers hosts Burlington (13-4, 9-1) Friday night and Elkhorn (9-9, 5-5) next Tuesday.
Swimmers take second at conference meet
The Badger swim team shocked everyone by taking second at the conference meet last Saturday. Coach Glen Biller said the boys tapered well and all had significant drops in times.
Badger scored 443 points, finishing just ten points behind Platteville/Lancaster. If Elkhorn could have won the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay instead of finishing second to Platteville, Badger would have won the meet. Platteville managed to edge the Elks 3:29.13-3:29.38 to secure the title. Badger was 5-3 in conference dual meets and finished second overall in the conference due to their second place finish at the conference meet.
Badger started the day by winning the 200 Yard Medley Relay (Tyler Lininger, Remy Glogovsky, Zach Zenner, Andrew Shane; 1:46.64). Glogovsky took third in the 200 Yard Freestyle (1:57.49). Tony Trajkovich took third in the 200 Yard IM (2:18.50). Shane took fourth in the 50 Yard Freestyle (23.94). Tyler Hall finished third in the 100 Yard Butterfly (1:02.47). Shane took fourth in the 100 Yard Freestyle (52.32).
The 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team took second (1:35.54). Tyler Lininger took sixth in the 100 Yard Backstroke (1:05.59). Glogovsky finished first in the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:03.72). The 400 Yard Freestyle relay team took fourth (3:44.77).
