Badger wrestlers win own invitational

The Lake Geneva Badger wrestlers won the Badger Invitational on Saturday with 203.5 points. Milton finished second with 195.5. Waterford finished sixth and Union Grove took seventh in the field of ten.

Badger had three undefeated champions. Randy Shine (5-0) took first place at 145 pounds. Shine won by pin twice, by technical fall, by major decision, and by decision. Tyler Otero (5-0, 182) won by pin twice, by major decision, and by decision twice. T.J. Hildenbrandt (4-0, 195) won by pin three times and by decision.

Five Badgers took second place: Michael Peter (3-1, 106 pounds), Alex Martinez (3-1, 113), Zach Leonard (4-1, 126), Andrew Allen (3-1, 160), and Robert Johnson (3-1, 220). Bryan Nugent finished third (3-2) at 132 pounds.

Badger defeated Union Grove in dual action 68-7 on January 8. Tony Howard (152 pounds), Tristan Steiner (160), Chris Oberholtzer (138), Allen (170), Otero (182), Hildenbrandt (195), Johnson (220), Peter (106), Martinez (113), Leonard (126), Nugent (132), and Shine (145) all won their matches.

 

Badger boys win third in a row then fall twice

      The Badger boys’ basketball team won its season-high third game in a row 55-39 at Whitewater on January 7. The Whippets (1-13) held the advantage early taking a 12-8 lead after one quarter and leading 21-14 at the half. The Badgers came back strong in the second half outscoring Whitewater 23-10 in the third quarter to take the lead and 18-8 in the final frame to win it.

Jake Kozlowski led the way with 15 points. Lincoln Wieseman added 12. Brett Harms led Whitewater with 15.

Badger put a scare into Elkhorn (8-6, 4-3 Southern Lakes Conference) before falling on the road 60-56 last Thursday. Badger jumped out on top 18-10 after one quarter but the Elks fought their way back to lead 29-26 at the half.

The second half was close with Badger leading 56-54 with about a minute to play. Elkhorn scored the last six points to pull out the win.

Jack Golitz led the Badgers with 14 points. Ian Weber added 12. The Elks had three players in double figures led by Aaron Wales and his 18 points. Arik Anderson added 16 and Jake Rios had 10.

Badger (5-8, 1-5 SLC) lost a non-conference game at Watertown (7-5) 70-56 on Saturday. The Goslings jumped on the Badgers early taking a 25-10 lead. Badger fought back to cut the deficit to 35-26 at the half. Watertown extended the lead to 54-40 at the end of three and the Badgers could not close the gap in the fourth.

Wieseman led the Badgers with 19 points. Tony Ashley added nine. Jake Larkin led Watertown with 17. Tarek Yaeggi added 15 and Sam Zwieg had 10.

 

Girls win two

      Badger’s girls improved to 5-1 (6-4 overall) with wins over Burlington and Delavan-Darien.

Badger beat Burlington at home 54-37 on January 8. Badger was in control the whole way leading 11-6 after one and 26-18 at the half. After an even third quarter the Badgers put the game away with a 15-6 fourth quarter.

Lilly Quinn led the Badgers with 15 points. Karina Reeves had 14. Ashley Derks led Burlington with 10.

The Badgers thoroughly dominated Delavan-Darien (1-7, 0-7 SLC) 60-30 on Saturday. Badger played at Kenosha Tremper Monday night. The girls and boys host Union Grove in a double header tomorrow night. The girls host Big Foot on Monday night. The boys host Waterford next Tuesday.

 

Swimmers take fifth

      The Badger swimmers took fifth at the Kenosha Bradford Invitational on Saturday with 353 points. Racine Case won the invite with 563.

The 200 Yard Medley Relay team (Tyler Lininger, Frank Glogovsky, Zach Zenner, and Andrew Shane) turned in the best Badger finish (fourth, 1:52.34). The 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team (same swimmers) took fifth (1:40.06). Individually, Glogovsky took fifth in the 500 Yard Freestyle (5:37.12).
