The Lake Geneva Badger wrestling team went 5-0 in winning the Verona Invitational last Saturday improving its overall dual record to 13-3 (3-1 Southern Lakes Conference).
Badger defeated Portage 61-9, Verona 64-3, East Troy 36-22, Slinger 62-12, and Monroe 42-24. Randy Shine (145 pounds), Tristan Steiner (152) and Tyler Otero (182) all were undefeated at 5-0. Andrew Cychner (170) was undefeated at 4-0. T.J. Hildenbrandt (195), Robert Johnson (220), Michael Peter (106) and Alex Martinez (120) all went 4-1.
Winners in the championship match against Monroe included Shine, Steiner, Cychner, Otero, Hildenbrandt, Peter, Martinez and Zach Leonard (126).
Badger defeated a depleted Wilmot team 66-9 last Thursday. Wilmot had several wrestlers out due to disciplinary issues, according to Coach Shane Koehl. Even so, Koehl said his team wrestled very well with some intensity and fire that had been lacking in some of their previous meets.
Shine (145), Steiner (152), Allen (160), Cychner (170), Otero (182), Hildenbrandt (195), Johnson (220), Peter (106), Leonard (126), Chris Oberholtzer (138), Branden Ludtke (120), and Carlos Garcia (285) all won their matches.
The Badgers traveled to Union Grove on Tuesday and host the Badger Invitational on Saturday.
Badger boys win second in a row
The Badger boys’ basketball team won its second game in a row last Friday 61-39 at home against Kenosha
Reuther.
Coach Darin Lottig said he thought the win paired with a win over Baraboo on Dec. 28 would give his team some confidence but he hoped they would respond better than they did the last time they won two in row. Badger beat Brookfield East and Delavan-Darien before failing to score in the first and third quarters of a loss to Westosha Central on Dec. 18.
The Badgers (4-6, 1-4 SLC) jumped out to a 17-12 lead after one quarter and led 33-20 at the half. Badger pushed the advantage to 48-26 at the end of the third quarter and coasted from there.
Jake Berhorst led the way with 19 points. Ian Weber added 12.
“Berhorst played well offensively because he committed himself to defending and rebounding first,” Lottig said.
Lottig said the team played harder than it had all year and greatly reduced its turnovers. Badger had eight turnovers after averaging about 20 per game coming in.
“We were able to sustain a little better effort for pretty much all four quarters,” Lottig said.
Dashay Fisher led Reuther (3-5) with 20 points. Demetrius Jordan added 14.
The Badgers played at Whitewater Monday night and play at Elkhorn tonight.
Girls beat Waterford
The Badger girls took over second place in the SLC with a 55-43 home win over Waterford (5-6, 4-2) last Thursday.
Badger (4-4, 3-1) played without starting center Lily Quinn, out with an ankle injury. The Badgers struggled to score in the first quarter falling behind 12-6 after one. They came back strong with 15 points in the second quarter and trailed 24-21 at the half.
Badger won the third quarter 13-9 and had a big fourth quarter outscoring Waterford 21-10.
Tristan Sproul led the Badgers with 15 points. Karina Reeves added 14. Tiffany Stiewe led Waterford with 12.
Badger hosted Burlington on Tuesday and travels to Delavan-Darien tomorrow night.
