Badger boys lost to Waterford

The Lake Geneva Badger girls’ basketball team improved to 2-1 (2-0 Southern Lakes Conference) with a 50-29 home win over Westosha Central on December 4.
The Badgers jumped on the Falcons (0-3, 0-2) early and often leading 21-8 at the end of the first quarter. Badger increased the advantage to 34-14 at the half. The Badgers outscored the Falcons 14-4 in the third quarter to lead 48-18 heading into the final frame. Westosha Central won a meaningless fourth quarter 11-2.
For the second game in a row the Badger defense kept an opponent from scoring in double digits in a quarter until the game was decided in the fourth quarter.
Karina Reeves led the Badgers with 14 points. Tristan Sproul added eight. Madi Stanczyk led the Falcons with nine points.
Badger boys lose by two to Waterford
The Badger boys gave SLC contender Waterford a run for their money the same night at Waterford losing 50-48.
The Badgers (0-3, 0-1 SLC) started slow falling behind 11-4 in the first quarter but clawed their way back into it by the early stages of the second quarter to tie the game. Waterford led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter and just 25-24
at the half.
The Badgers actually took a five-point lead midway through the third quarter at 32-27 but then they started to turn the ball over and give up too many offensive rebounds to the Wolverines according to Coach Darin Lottig.
“We stood around the perimeter watching the ball handler which contributed to our ball security issues,” Lottig said.
Lottig did say he thought his team outworked Waterford at times and had their chances to win it at the end. Waterford took advantage of 25 total Badger turnovers to come back from that five-point deficit to lead by two at the end of the third quarter. That turned out to be the final margin of victory for Waterford (3-2, 1-0) as both teams scored 16 in the fourth quarter.
Jake Kozlowski led the Badgers with 12 points. Lincoln Wieseman added 11. Tanner Hunsucker had 17 for the Wolverines. Chris Benavides added 14.
“I am encouraged by our positives,” Lottig said. “We have a lot of solid potential.”
Lottig said he was still looking for a go-to guy to consistently make quality basketball decisions.
The Badgers lost at home to Wilmot 57-30 last Friday. The Badger offense struggled all night as the Badgers fell behind 11-2 at the end on the first quarter and 24-11 at the half. Lottig said the defense continues to improve and rebounding was better as well, but the team had another 25 turnovers. Rob Slagle led the Badgers with eight points.
Wrestlers improve to 2-0
The Badger wrestlers defeated Westosha Central 67-3 on December 6 to improve to 2-0 in SLC dual meets. The Badgers also finished third out of 16 teams at the Watertown Invitational on December 1.
Against the Falcons, Andrew Allen (170 pounds), Tyler Otero (182), Tayler Hildenbrandt (195), Robert Johnson (220), Carlos Garcia (285), Michael Peter (106), Cody Sadikoff (113), Edgar Ortiz (126), Adan Ortiz (132), Chris Oberholtzer (138), Randy Shine (145), Tristan Steiner (152), and Connor Ruff (160) all won their matches.
Twelve out of 14 weight classes scored during the Watertown Invite. First place finishes were turned in by Shine (5-0) and Hildenbrandt (5-0). Johnson finished second (4-1). Peter (5-1), Allen (3-2), and Otero (3-2) finished third.
Badger faced off against fellow SLC contender Burlington Tuesday night at Burlington in a match that will eventually help determine who will win the SLC title.
Swim team takes eighth
The Badger swim team finished eighth at the Fort Atkinson Invitational on Saturday with 63 points. Verona/Mt. Horeb won the event with 359 points. Andrew Shane turned in the best Badger finish taking ninth in the 200 Yard IM (2:20.12)
