Mary Kapitan, 82, of Elkhorn, passed away on Aug. 25, 2022, at her home.
She was born in Vrhnika, Slovenia on Dec. 16, 1939, the daughter of Karol and Mary (Opeka) Hren. Mary was united in marriage to Dennis M. Kapitan Sr. on Feb. 19, 1966, at Mother of the God Church in Waukegan, Illinois.
She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Elkhorn. Mary enjoyed going for walks and Triglav picnics. She was well known for her baking and cooking, especially her cookies, pies and cakes. Mary loved her family more than anything and will be deeply missed.
Mary is survived by her six children, Ann (Jeffrey) Toth, Dennis Kapitan Jr., Stephen Kapitan, Diane (Michael) Selke, Michael (Tonia) Kapitan and Mary (Jared) Savage; eight grandchildren, Michael, Elizabeth, Matthew, Samantha, Grace, Dylan, Madison and Mason; and her three siblings, Carl (Joyce) Hren, Gregory (Mary Ann) Hren and Margaret (John) Rems.
She was preceded in death by her parents, aunt, Frances Opeka; and loving husband of 50 years, Dennis.
Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 2 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 107 W. Walworth St. Elkhorn, with the Rev. Oriol officiating. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Private Burial will be at Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville, Illinois.
