Joan Lewandowski, 86, died Feb. 9, 2017, at Brolen Park, East Troy. She was born March 17, 1930, to Gertrude Mashock and Edward Kirsch in Milwaukee.
She grew up on Milwaukee’s north side during the depression but often remembered going to her grandparents’ farm in Green Lake where there were “treats” like sugar and butter.
She graduated from North Division High School in 1947 and went to work as a bookkeeper at the First Wisconsin Bank.
At the end of 1948, she met the late Jerome Lewandowski during a dance at the Eagles Club on Wisconsin Avenue in Milwaukee. They were soon engaged and married on May 20, 1950. They moved to Potter’s Lake (East Troy) in August of 1951 and raised three boys, Mark, Rick and Jeff.
She worked as a secretary at Divine Word Seminary where she retired after more than 20 years.
In her early life Joan enjoyed bicycling, swimming, ice skating, cross country skiing and bowling. She had a longtime passion for sewing, singing, gardening, and traveling.
She was very active in her community contributing time to her church, blood drives, the food pantry, the Woman’s Club, and working at the polls.
Survivors include her sons Mark (Donna) and Jeff; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, other relatives and many friends.
She was further preceded in death by her son, Richard.
Funeral Mass will be at noon on Thursday, Feb. 16, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 1975 Beulah Ave., East Troy.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
