Dennis M. Kapitan Sr., 78 of Elkhorn, passed away January 17, 2017, at Burlington Medical and Rehab Center in Burlington.
He was born Nov. 2, 1938, in North Chicago, Ill., the son of the late Lawrence W. and Annette (Nowak) Kapitan. Dennis married Mary Hren on Feb. 19, 1966, at Mother of the God Church in Waukegan, Ill. He served in the United States Army as a paratrooper from 1961 to 1963. Dennis was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed beekeeping and photography. More than anything, Dennis loved being up north at the cabin in Minnesota.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Mary; six children, Ann (Jeffrey) Toth, Dennis Kapitan Jr., Stephen Kapitan, Diane (Michael) Selke, Michael (Tonia Harvel) Kapitan and Mary (Jared) Savage; eight grandchildren, Michael, Elizabeth, Matthew, Samantha, Grace, Dylan, Madison and Mason; a sister, Gloria (James) Kazmer, a niece, Mary (Jay) Tomczak and an aunt, Rose Zegar. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 107 W. Walworth St., Elkhorn, with the Rev. Oriol Regales officiating. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time at the church. Private burial will be at Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville, Ill.
