George H. Welch Jr., 100, a lifetime Darien area resident, died Jan. 7, 2016, at Holton Manor Nursing Home in Elkhorn.
He was born Dec. 28, 1915, in Sharon to George H. Welch, Sr. and Sarah Woods. He graduated from Darien High School in 1935. He married Darling Zink on Sept. 23, 1939, in Dubuque, Iowa. She preceded him in death May 2, 2009.
He worked for many years for Darien Township on the road maintenance crew. He then went to work for Libby’s Frozen Foods and Packing Corp. in rural Darien. He was the oldest living member of the Southern Lakes Masonic Lodge No. 12.
George was a happy man and loved by those who knew him. He is survived by two sons, George Welch III, of Darien, and Tom (Diann) Welch, of Delavan; a sister, Laura Enright, of Delavan; seven grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois (Joe) Neumeier; sisters Myrtle, Helen, Milly, Sara and Marge; brothers Ralph and Melvin and an infant brother. George was the last of the Welch boys.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Betzer Funeral Home in Delavan. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday and an hour before the service Tuesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Darien Cemetery. A reception will be held after burial at the Southern Lakes Masonic Lodge on South Second Street in Delavan.
