LaVerne F. Koerner, 91, of Fontana, passed away on June 26, 2015, at Golden Years of Walworth.
Vern was born in Dorchester, in 1923, to William and Odelia Koerner. He served his country that he loved from May 15, 1946, until the day of his honorable discharge on April 14, 1949, with the rank of staff sergeant in the United States Air Force. Vern also proudly worked as a custodian for Fontana Elementary School for 30 years. After retirement there he worked for his brother Bill, as a school bus driver at Koerner Bus Service Inc. in Walworth for 20 years.
For many years Vern served as a volunteer for Lakeland nursing home. He was a dedicated member of The American Legion Post 102 in Walworth for over 30 years, where he took the position of post commander and had been on the firing squad. He also was a member of the Harvard Moose Lodge and a faithful member of Faith Lutheran Church in Walworth. Vern had also been a member of the Fontana Fire Department.
LaVerne is survived by two brothers, Herbert (Edith) Koerner, of Delavan, and Lyle Sr. (Patricia) Koerner, Hazelhurst, caregivers William (Eve) Koerner III and Brenda (Craig) Utesch, both of Walworth; as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harold and William Jr.; and three sisters, Martha, Gertrude and Lorraine.
Visitation will take place Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the time of service at noon at Toynton’s Walworth Funeral Home, 328 Kenosha St., Walworth.
Burial will follow at Walworth Center Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at his church.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Faith Lutheran Church, 420 Read St., Walworth.
