Scott A. “Straiter” Strait, 52, of Whitewater, died on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Janesville.
He was born on Feb. 22, 1961 in Fort Atkinson, to Kermit and Marlene (Egstad) Strait. He married Kelly Sweno on June 12, 1993 in Whitewater.
He attended St. Patrick Catholic Church in Whitewater.
Scott graduated from Whitewater High School and from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He was employed at the Coburn Company in Whitewater for 23 years.
Scott served on the Whitewater Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years and he had also volunteered as an EMT. He always kept a watchful eye out for helping others.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, hiking at Devil’s Lake, country music, grilling out, and a cold Leinie. He was a sports fan, especially the Packers and Brewers. He was famous for cooking his “funeral beans,” “firefighter beans,” and his Sunday morning breakfast.
Scott was a loving father with a great sense of humor. He loved to sneak up and scare his kids. He made it a point to attend all of his kid’s activities. Everyone knows that Scott didn’t have any pets even though there were many pets at the house and he was very attached to them.
Surviving are his wife, Kelly Strait of Whitewater; one son, Carl Strait of Whitewater; two daughters, Yvanna and Catherine “Caty” Strait, both of Whitewater; his mother, Marlene Strait of Whitewater; his mother-in-law, Betty Sweno of Whitewater; three brothers-in-law, Jeff (Marcia) Sweno of Mundelein, Ill., Scott (Robin) Sweno of Palmyra and Michael (Andrea) Sweno of Marathon; one sister-in-law, Julie Strait of Elkhorn; 14 nieces and nephews, Rachel Fillebrown, Megan and Kyle Strait, and Robert, Kaylan, Christopher, Ashley, Steven, Eugene, Alyson, Rhiana, Mara, Jacob and Jared Sweno; many aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, Michael Strait, and his father-in-law, Eugene Sweno.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Whitewater at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, with the Rev. Stephen Forrest officiating.
Burial will take place at Hillside Cemetery in Whitewater.
Friends may call at the church on Friday from 3-7 p.m. with a Rosary Service to be held at 7 p.m. Friends may also call at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent in care of the family.
