Raymond “Red” L. Wallin, age 92, passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2013.
Red was born in Chesterton, Ind., on May 26, 1921, the son of the late Charles and Hailga (Madsen) Wallin.
Red served his country in the United States Army/Air Force during World War II from 1943-1946 in the 441st Troop Carrier Group as a first lieutenant and in the Air Force Reserves from 1946-1962 retiring as a captain.
He worked for Inland Steel Company for 30 years. Red was a member of the Moose Lodge and American Legion. Red was an avid golfer and earned many trophies. He enjoyed IndyCar racing for which he had many driver autographs on his straw hat, and loved to play poker. Red moved to Palmyra in 2003 from Chesterton and enjoyed his time meeting friends for coffee at Citgo and Maney’s Lakeside. He enjoyed going to fish fries at Edge of Town Café and Rick’s Eastsider, as well as breakfast at the Hen House.
Dear father of Karyn Jo (William) Witte and Storm Lynn (David) Jernigan. Cherished grandfather of April (Chad) Jernigan-Stier, Harry Jernigan, and Lisa Witte. Great-grandfather of William S. Witte III, Abigail Witte, Kayla Jernigan-Stier, Ashleigh Jernigan-Stier, Lucas Stier, Colton Jernigan, Alyssa Jernigan, Ethan Jernigan, and Myliegh Jernigan.
Red was loved and will be remembered by other relatives and friends.
Red was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Bessie, grandson, William S. Witte II, and siblings, Chet (Alice), Charles “Dynamite,” Mildred (Louis), Jimmy (Mary), and Paul (Geri).
A Funeral Service for Red will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 7 p.m. at Haase Lockwood & Associates Funeral Home, 320 W. Main St. Palmyra. Visitation will take place from 5 p.m. until the time of service.
Burial with Military Honors will take place on Friday, July 12, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Chesterton Cemetery, 300 E. Porter Ave., Chesterton, Ind. (meet at the cemetery gravesite).
