Irma Elizabeth Curry, 96, of Delavan, passed away peacefully June 16, 2013, at Lakeland Medical Center, Elkhorn. Born at home in Lamont, Wisconsin on March 8, 1917, to Casmira (Jakowski) and Owen Andrews, Irma was the second of four daughters. She attended a Lafayette County rural school through eighth grade and graduated from Argyle High School in 1935. She completed the two-year course of study in the Department of Elementary Education at the State Teachers College at Platteville in June 1937. She returned to Platteville later and earned her Bachelor of Science in 1966.
Irma married David Hiram Curry in 1939. They lived first in Lamont and settled permanently in Delavan in 1944.
Irma taught school for 32 years with her last position at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf where she retired in 1981.
Irma was a loving wife, teacher, and mother who embraced life. She was an active member of the Delavan Lionesses, played marathon bridge, was a member of the Delbrook Golf Course Ladies League, served in the United Methodist Church, traveled domestically and internationally and took dance lessons from Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Milwaukee.
One of the highlights of her long and engaging life was performing a dance routine with David in “The Follies” (1977) that starred Ann Jefferies and Dorothy Collins at the Melody Top Theatre. Irma will be missed greatly by all who knew her.
Irma was preceded in death by her loving husband, David, in 2004.
Survivors include sisters, Doris Varley and Betty Brixius; brother-in-law, Billy Curry; daughters, Ann Ruff (Larry), and Rita Kendall (Craig, deceased); grandchildren, Nathan (Cheryl), Jim (Tia), and Adam (betrothed to Michelle), and great-grandchildren, Cutter, Curry and Greyson.
Union Grove Cemetery in Darlington will be her final resting place. Donations may be made in her name to a charity or religious organization of your choice or to the music fund of the Delavan United Methodist Church, 213 S. Second St., Delavan.
