PATRONILLA ‘PAT’ AMMON

Patronilla “Pat” Ammon, 95, went home to the Lord on Feb. 13. She was born Petronilla Joan Sopata on Jan. 27, 1918 in Hastings, Pa., the fourth of eight daughters born to the late John and Mary Sopata. She was raised in the borough of Emeigh Run, Pa., until she was 11-years-old. In 1929, she and her family moved to be with relatives in Chicago. She left school after graduation from eighth grade to help support her family.
In 1939, she met Gordon Ammon of Honey Creek while on vacation at Delavan Lake. They were married in 1941, and made their first home in Walworth where they owned and operated a Texaco Oil Station. While Pat’s husband was serving in the U.S. Army overseas, their first child was born and Pat moved back to Chicago to have the support of her family. In April of 1947, Pat and her family moved to the village of Williams Bay. It was here that they had purchased a small gas station and auto repair business. In 1952, Pat went to work at George Williams College Camp where she served as head of housekeeping services for several years.
She lived in Williams Bay for more than 30 years and for several years in San Diego, Calif., Groton, Conn. and Goose Greek, S.C., before returning to Wisconsin in 1988. She served as an auxiliary volunteer for many years with the Delavan Fire Department and as a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Williams Bay, as well as various neighborhood social groups and community organizations.
Pat was a devoted wife, mother and friend to all. Her door was always open, whether you needed a helping hand or a loan to tide you over, Pat never put herself first. Her children family and friends were her truest and most precious wealth. She lived her life by a simple principle: What you have can be lost, but what you give can never be taken away.
She is survived by her son, Gordon II of Kenosha;grandchildren, Andrew of Watertown and Mia and Zoe Currin both of Hagarstown, Md., and great-granddaughter, Elyse Currin also of Hagerstown.
