New turf re-dedication includes celebration of 1980 state champs

The football game at Whitewater High School on Sept. 10 looked to the future and offered a glimpse of the past as it featured the re-dedication of the newly installed turf the school’s football and soccer teams will compete on for home games. It also celebrated one of the Whippets state championship teams.
The night began with Mercyhealth’s Rapid helicopter delivering the football for the game, which saw the Whippets take on Edgewood.
Mark Maas, former Whitewater Middle School teacher and track and field coach – also known by many as “the voice of the Whippets” – served as the guest speaker. He began by sharing with fans the high school had opened in 1994 without athletic fields.
“The 21st Century Club did the hard work and supportive fundraising to make the original fields happen,” Maas said.
Following the ribbon cutting ceremony in the middle of the field, Maas made a few special requests – for Whippet students, including athletes – as well as the Whitewater community as a whole.
“May our football, soccer and all of our athletes always be safe inside your fences. May our teams always work hard and dream big inside these gates…”
