UW-W’s Summeround series kicks off June 25
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Department of Theater and Dance has unveiled its annual Summeround series.
And the lineup at Hicklin Studio Theatre features the romantic comedies “Mary, Mary” and “Blithe Spirit.”
Jean Kerr’s “Mary, Mary” offers a playful journey through marriage, divorce, sex and taxes, while Noel Coward’s “Blythe Spirit” involves a look at marriage even after death do us part.
Performances of “Mary, Mary” are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, June 25-28, and at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 29-30.
Meanwhile, “Blithe Spirit” shows are planned at the same times on July 16-19 and July 20-21.
Recently divorced, the wisecracking cynic Mary and infuriatingly sensible Bob meet at his apartment in the hope of avoiding an audit by the IRS in “Mary, Mary.” When a snowstorm forces Mary to spend the night, the next morning proves interesting as mutual friend and lawyer Oscar, Hollywood heartthrob and neighbor Dirk Winston and Bob’s considerably younger fiancée Tiffany arrive.
In “Blythe Spirit,” successful writer Charles Condomine, in researching the occult for his next novel, enlists the aid of Madame Arcati to conjure a séance at a small dinner party. To everyone’s surprise, she successfully brings back the spirit of his ex-wife, Elvira, who sets out to ruin Charles and his current wife Ruth’s happy home.
Ruth is accidentally killed and joins Elvira in otherworldly mischief, haunting the hapless Charles.
