While other teams around the state were snowed and rained out of games and practices in the beginning of the early spring sports season, Palmyra-Eagle softball was down in warm weather playing the game they love. As a result, the team’s bond grew and the memories will last forever.
“It is really hard to get outside in the winter and spring, and getting out there (in Florida) gave us an advantage over teams that are stuck here in inside,” senior Lauren Stefanczyk said.
The trip was made a reality with support from the Palmyra and Eagle communities. The team raised money through donations from raffle winnings, a bake sale, tip jars, along with running a booth at Kettle Moraine Days and with the help of volunteers it made it a reality.
Over spring break, the Panthers played 10 games in four days, allowing them to get ready for their first season in the Trailways South conference. The games included a varsity scrimmage, five varsity non-conference games and four junior varsity games with one being at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando.
“It was really cool and exciting that we could be the first one to do this,” Stefanczyk said. “I’m really hoping that the freshman and sophomores go their senior years because it is very special.”
On the trip, the varsity Panthers team went 2-2-1 with their two wins coming against schools from West Virginia and Pennsylvania. They played three games against teams from Florida as well.
