Former University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football coach Lance Leipold has had another honor added to his list of accomplishments. The six-time national championship winner will be honored this week as he is inducted to the Wisconsin Football Coaches Hall of Fame.
“It is humbling for multiple reasons to be recognized by your peers like that and to be in a group of some of the people that I grew up admiring and wanted to be like,” Leipold said.” The other part that I look at is to quickly turn back to the players and assistant coaches that made that possible as well as university support.”
Leipold, a Jefferson native, was the head football coach at UW-Whitewater from 2007 to 2014. He also played for the Warhawks in the 1980s. He played for his two coaching predecessors, Forrest Perkins and Bob Berezowitz.
During his tenure as head football coach at UW-Whitewater, Leipold went 109-6 with six national championships and seven conference championships. He was the fastest in NCAA history to 100 wins among coaches.
When Leipold looks back at his tenure, he appreciates the small things that went into all the winning he had.
“The biggest thing is more appreciating of the work of the players and the ability of our coaches to maintain the success,” Leipold said. “You see a lot of programs at all levels, sometimes you are fortunate to win a title of a high level, but getting back there and consistently doing it in the way we were able to was really remarkable.”
