With the days of summer winding down, the Southern Kettle Moraine Horse Trails Association is starting to look toward its annual Fall Roundup event, and is in need of volunteers for the events.
Also needed in the event are donations for raffle baskets and silent auction items, sponsors and cash donations.
Proceeds from the event will be used to maintain and improve the horse trails and campground in the Southern Kettle Moraine. Past improvements include the electrification of 29 campsites and a pavilion at Horseriders Campground, kiosk installation, purchase and maintenance of the Viele Loop portable toilet, a donation to the Palmyra Corral Project and the installation and maintenance of the Obstacle Course Trail at the Highway S trails in Eagle. Money also went to the development of Wilton Road rest area.
The group has installed hitching posts and mounting blocks throughout the trails and trailheads, and conducts trail cleanups. Projects the association is working on include working with the Department of Natural Resources on including upgrading hitching posts at the Highway S trailhead, installing additional concrete manure pits at Horseriders Campground and the development of a new day parking lot to provide additional access to the Ottawa horse trails.
The eighth annual Fall Roundup will be Saturday, Sept. 9 at the Horseriders Campground in Palmyra. Activities include a group trail ride starting at 10 a.m. Participants must bring their own horse.
Dinner catered by Bon Ton Bakery, of Jefferson, is at 4 p.m. A nonrefundable preregistration is required for the dinner and can be completed online through www.skmhta.com, through the association’s Facebook page or at www.Eventbrite.com. Paper forms can also be printed from website and mailed to address with payment made out to “SKMHTA.”

Anyone is welcome to join the group for dinner with completed preregistration. Meal includes roast beef au jus, pulled barbeque pork, hash brown casserole, baked beans, California broccoli bacon cheese salad and fresh fruit salad. Association members will provide a variety of cakes and desserts as well.
Registrations must be completed by Aug. 20 to guarantee a t-shirt with a meal or submit by September 1 for dinner only. The association member price for dinner and a shirt is $20 and the non-member price is $25. Membership is not required to attend.
The raffle drawing will be at 3 p.m. Prizes have been donated by area sponsors and association members. Some early donations include sofa-sized framed prints, themed baskets for dog and horse lovers and gift certificates from area businesses such as Seven Seas Restaurant, The Trout House at Rushing Waters, Squidy’s, Precision Chiropractic, Tractor Supply Company, Horse Emporium, Gait Ways LLC, and Elkhorn Veterinary Clinic.
Preregistration is not required for the raffle prizes or silent auction items. However, participants must be present to win.
Membership applications and cash donations will be accepted day of event and association merchandise will be available for purchase, including trail hankies and t-shirts.
