Court appearance set for man seen with gun near WMS

An initial appearance is scheduled to resume May 4 for a Whitewater man charged with burglarizing his half-brother’s apartment.

Daniel S. Erdman, 31, was charged April 12 in Walworth County Circuit Court with burglary of a building or dwelling and disorderly conduct with the use of a dangerous weapon, both as a repeater.

When schools were on high alert April 7 during a search for Janesville gun-store burglar Joseph Jakubowski, a man was seen riding a bicycle near Whitewater Middle School with a gun in his waistband, according to the criminal complaint.

Police went to the home of Erdman, who was believed to be the man on the bike, but Erdman retreated into his home after he saw officers, according to the complaint.

Police obtained a search warrant and the Walworth County SWAT team assisted in taking Erdman into custody at about 7 p.m.

Erdman told police he’d had a confrontation with Tyler Heth, his half-brother, near Domino’s Pizza, went home and retrieved his BB gun and had his BB gun in his hip holster when he rode his bike up Douglas Court and onto the school service driveway between the middle school and elementary school in Whitewater, according to the complaint.

Erdman said people were looking at him funny, probably because of the gun on his hip, and he circled by the same group of people twice then had a feeling that something went wrong and returned home, according to the complaint.

Heth told police when he’d talked to Erdman earlier that day, Erdman told Heth he had gone to Heth’s apartment to clean it, which Heth said Erdman did not have permission to do. When Heth returned home that night, a window in his apartment was broken, his belongings had been moved around, and an iPad, a bottle of Jagermeister and a picture frame had been taken, according to the complaint.
