Residents trapped in a four-alarm structure fire at a residential apartment complex in Whitewater tonight are safe and no injuries have been reported, according to Whitewater Fire Department officials.
The fire at University Garden Apartments, a multi-unit apartment complex on Tratt Street, was reported just after 6:30 p.m. as a “multiple story complex with victims trapped,” on the Walworth County Scanner’s Facebook page. Shortly thereafter, the Whitewater Fire Department requested mutual aid from numerous departments throughout the area.
“The fire is contained and the entire apartment complex will be closed until further notice,” a press release from the Whitewater Fire Department states.
The Whitewater Fire Department, and officials from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and the American Red Cross are working together to find temporary shelter for residents displaced because of the fire, according to the release.
“UW-Whitewater students who reside at Garden Apartments should go to the UW-Whitewater Visitors Center and displaced Garden Apartments community members should go to the UW-Whitewater Williams Center, Gymnasium #1,” the release states.
The Whitewater Fire Department is actively investigating the fire.
Updates will be posted on mywalworthcounty.com as they become available. A complete story will appear in next week’s issue of the Whitewater Register.
