Buying a bratwurst or hot dog Friday and Saturday from the Whitewater Chamber of Commerce during Maxwell Street Days will do more than satisfy your lunch cravings.

The Chamber is holding its 5th Annual Brat and a Buck Sale Friday and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chamber offices at 150 W. Main St. in downtown Whitewater.

Proceeds will benefit the Chamber’s newly created scholarship fund.

“What we’re doing is looking to give a scholarship to a Whitewater High School student that will be going to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater as a student the following year,” Whitewater Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Marie Koch said. “We have really built up, in the last couple of years, a great working relationship with the school district and the university.

“It was something where we wanted to give back to them.”

Koch said the Board of Directors of the WACC will serve as the committee that determines what the scholarship will look like after funds are raised. The structure of the scholarship and criteria for applicants is yet to be decided.

“We’re hoping whoever is picked is someone who gives back to the community,” Koch said. “Someone who does charity work of some sort.”

The committee includes business leaders and also individuals involved with both the Whitewater Area School District and the university.

“We’ve very fortunate with the committee, as far as having a variety of people associated with the university and the school district,” Koch said. “It’s a nice cross section.”

The menu features brats for $4 and hot dogs for $3. A meal includes a choice of chips and a drink, and sells for an additional dollar.

Extra drinks are $1, and extra bags of chips are 50 cents.

Bulk business orders can be faxed to the Chamber at (262) 472-4575, and will be readied for pick-up.

Each brat and hot dog sold comes with a Chamber Buck that is redeemable at participating businesses during the city’s Maxwell Street Days celebration on Saturday. Koch said the coupons can also be used at participating businesses on Friday and Sunday.

Many of the downtown shops will feature sidewalk sales during the event along with savings on their products.

The Chamber will also offer entertainment on Saturday. The band “Tripwire” will play from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. between Center and Main streets off of First Street. Children from summer dance classes sponsored by the city’s parks and recreation department will perform in the same location at 1 p.m.
