On Jan. 13 at First United Methodist Church in Whitewater more than 100 people took in a performance by Pitches and Notes, an all-female a cappella group formed by students on the University of Wisconsin -Madison’s campus.
The performance was the start of the group’s first Wisconsin winter tour, with additional stops in eight other cities on the docket.
The eleven numbers performed included a mix of popular songs (e.g., “Natural Woman” originally performed by Aretha Franklin) and recent international hits (e.g., “Settle Down” by New Zealand guitarist/singer Kimbra).
Lauren Dalzin, a 2012 graduate of Whitewater High School who performed in many Whitewater Unified School District theatrical and musical productions and serves as business manager for Pitches and Notes said members are diverse and not, surprisingly, pursuing music-related degrees.
“We don’t have any music majors in the group. We have everything from engineering, education, science, and business majors. The purpose of Pitches is to provide an opportunity for female singers to be part of a team of people who share the same hobby,” Dalzin said.
“For me, music had been such an important part of my life prior to being in college,” Dalzin added. “Before I joined the group I wasn’t involved in anything musically in college and I felt its absence very strongly. Not only has being in the group filled this void, it’s exposed me to so many other types of music and I’ve met some of my very best friends through it.”
Pitches and Notes will be competing at 7 p.m., Feb. 14 at the Midwest Quarterfinals of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) in Mills Hall in the Mosse Humanities Building on the UW-Madison. Tickets for the performance are available online at www.freshtix.com/events/icca-midwest-qf-wisconsin-2015.
The group also has plans to produce a CD, with sights set on a release in the fall.
