Police say victim may have survived thanks to concerned citizen
At 12:13 a.m. on Tuesday, Whitewater Police Department officers responded to 880 S. Janesville St. for a reported domestic altercation.
Upon arrival officers located a 32-year-old victim with multiple stab wounds to the abdomen, arm and hands. The victim was subsequently transported to the hospital by the Whitewater Rescue Squad and remains in stable condition according to a press release issued by the Whitewater Police Department following the incident.
The 27-year-old suspect who allegedly committed the stabbing and was later identified as Jason Grant from the Chicago, Ill. area, was located immediately following the incident and taken into custody.
Grant has been confined in the Walworth County Jail on charges of Attempted 1st Degree Intentional Homicide, False Imprisonment, Strangulation and Suffocation, Disorderly Conduct, and Habitual Criminality. Additional charges may be forthcoming and the incident remains under investigation.
In addition to releasing information about the incident, the department issued a reminder to citizens that the scenario could have ended differently.
“Had it not been for the willingness of a concerned citizen to call the police, the outcome may have been more tragic. Taking the time to call in suspicious noises and disturbing behavior can make a difference and could save a life,” it was stated in the press release. “Members of the Whitewater Police Department wish to encourage all community members to continue to be active partners in community safety.”
The Whitewater Police Department was assisted by members of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Police Services, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Whitewater Rescue Squad with additional assistance from the Fort HealthCare Paramedic Intercept.
