Summer fun for all ages slated at library

A variety of summer programs will be offered at Irvin L. Young Memorial Library beginning with a kickoff event slated 3:30 to 4:15 p.m., Friday, June 13. The event will feature The Figureheads, a hip-hop band from Milwaukee so all are welcome to listen to the music and dance, have some popcorn and get signed up for summer programs at the same time.

Registration for Summer Reading Storytime begins Monday, June 2. Sign up children for Preschool Storytime (3-5 year olds), Tuesdays from 10 to 10:45 a.m., Toddler Storytime (2-3 year olds), Wednesdays, 10 to 10:45 a.m. or Lapsit Storytime (12-24 month olds), Thursdays, 10 to 10:45 a.m.

Weekly themes will include: June 16 – Color My World, June 23 – Out of this World, June 30 – Zing Bang Boom!, July 7 – Count on It, July 14 – Animal Stew, and July 21 – Water World.  There will not be a storytime the week of July 28.

Fizz Boom Read is the theme of this summer’s reading program for children ages preschool through fourth grade (in the fall). Registration starts June 2 in the children’s area of the library.  Each reader will receive six reading records; return each completed record and receive a small incentive prize and be entered in the grand prize drawing. All reading records must be turned in by Thursday, July 31.

Children entering kindergarten though fourth grade this fall may also participate in Tuesdays @ Two. Each week will feature a different adventure with theme-related activities, games, crafts and snacks. Activities begin at 2 p.m. and last 45 minutes.  Registration is required for each week. Themes include: June 17 – R U Curious?, June 24 –  Water Works, July 1 –  Fizz, Boom, Pop!,  July 8– Techno Fun, and July 22 – Bubbleguts. There will not be a program on Tuesday, July 15 though families are invited to take part in the library’s Horicon Marsh program that day.

A special Out of This World library sleepover will be held for all children who will be entering third-fourth grade this fall and have completed three or more reading records. Registration deadline is Saturday, July 12 and the sleepover will be held on Friday, July 18, starting at 7 p.m. and ending at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 9.

Kids of all ages are invited to attend Performing Live This Week. Many popular performers are returning as well as some new entertainment. Bubble Man will kick off the season on Wednesday, June 18 from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. and will perform stunts using lots and lots of bubbles. On Wednesday, June 25 from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. Tom Pease returns to entertain with music, storytelling and humor. On Wednesday, July 9, 2014 the Dinosaur Lady, Carolyn Richard, will present a fun and educational program using full-scale Dinosaur models, real fossils, pictures, costumes, and puppets. Bob Kann, a storyteller, juggler and magician will present mesmerizing magic and spark kids’ imaginations on Thursday July 17 from 1:30 – 2:15 p.m. Nature’s Niche: Weird Science, slated Monday, July 21 at 1:30 p.m., will highlight how creatures have been important to new scientific discoveries that help enhance our lives and possible future discoveries.

The Imaginator is the theme for the Young Adult Summer Reading Program.  Registration starts June 2 for all students fifth grade or higher. Participants receive six reading records; return each reading record and receive a small incentive price, and an entry for the grand prize drawing.

Special programs for YA’s start on Thursday, June 19 at 6:30 p.m. with a visit by Angie Stanton the YA author of Royalty Lost. The YA program, How to Survive a Zombie Attack, is set for June 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. and will feature a movie plus monstrous snacks. YA Mad Scientist Party will be held on Thursday July 10 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. when vistors will join friends for dinner at Einstein’s Megatronic Cosmic Café.

Battle of the Books will also be held for students entering sixth grade or higher this fall. Five students comprise a team and meet on Monday, June 23 from 4 to 4:30 p.m. and Monday, July 7 from 6 to 7 p.m. The local competition will be on Wednesday, July 23 from 7 to 8 p.m. with the winning team attending the system tournament in West Bend, Wednesday, July 30 at 2 p.m.

Literacy Elements introduces the Adult Summer Reading Program. Participants receive reading logs and for each reading log/book review turned in the participant is entered in a weekly drawing as well as the grand prize drawing.  All records must be turned in between Monday, June 23 and Thursday, July 31.

Special adult events include: The Beatles: Band of the Sixties on June 21, 2014 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and Retirementology of the Retirement Classroom on Monday July 7 at 2 p.m. This class is designed to prepare current and future retirees for their retirement years and provide the education necessary to accomplish the most prevalent goal amongst retirees – to not run out of money.

Maker Mondays continue to create at the library. This program is for middle and high school aged kids, and adults. Creative events will be on Mondays, June 23, July 21 and August 18 each beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Movie Time will be on Friday, June 27 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and include refreshments. A special Toddler Drive-In Movie Time will be on Friday, July 25 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Game and Board Day is July 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. for children of all ages.

Family Fun Night will be held on Tuesday, July 15 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Horicon Marsh Education Center featuring a variety of events for everyone and the opportunity to explore the marsh at night.

The summer season will conclude on Thursday, July 31 at 1:30 p.m. with Miller and Mike, Jugglers and comedians extraordinaire followed by an Ice Cream Social. This event does require registration. The grand prize drawing will be held on Friday, August 1 at 1:30 pm.  Winners need not be present to win.
