Self defense class for women offered in Palmyra

Self Defense for Women is a two-day workshop that will be offered on Saturday, May 24, and Saturday, May 31 from 8 a.m. to noon at Kempo Goju Martial Arts School, 110 W. Main St. in Palmyra.

The cost is $40 per person, which includes both days, and is payable at registration on the first day of training.

This specialized training will provide the basic self-defense skills, and will focus on situations as they occur in the real world. The class is open to women of all ages.

Women who are not familiar with any martial arts or self-defense techniques, should strongly consider taking this self-defense class as it aims to improve personal safety and help attendees feel more confident and secure when out on the streets. They can also check out some tips online at websites such as Skilled Fighter, including others, so they are up-to-date with the latest information on martial arts as well as other defense techniques.

Participants will learn how to get out of basic holds, how to punch someone safely and other basic physical defense techniques. In addition, attendees will be taught about vulnerable parts of the body to learn how to kick where it counts.

The techniques taught will be repeated several times, so that participants will be able to remember them quickly in an emergency situation and participants will safely try to moves learned on each other, offering hands-on experience.

The self-defense techniques will incorporate a variety of martial arts disciplines. Many of the martial arts feature strong defense moves that are easy to learn. The class environment is well stocked with mats and other protective gear so that students can learn the proper moves without hurting themselves or each other.

In addition to physical self defense, participants will learn how to increase personal safety in other ways including awareness, how to assess a situation and how to communicate clearly.

As part of the communication section of the class, students will be led through group exercises that will include screaming and other modes of communication. Women will be taught about forceful and clear communication in emergency situations, so that they will be prepared to say, “NO!” to an attacker or to cry out for help.

At the end of the class, those who took part should feel more secure and confident, and will project that image if in a potentially dangerous situation.

The instructor for this class is Charles Warren, Sr. who began his martial art training in judo in 1963. In 1966 he entered the Air Force and began studying Kempo karate. He traveled to Japan and was introduced to Goju Kai karate where he obtained shodan, 1st degree black belt.

In 1970, after returning from Vietnam, he began teaching the art as it’s known today, Kempo-Goju Karate. By combining the two disciplines, Warren is able to broaden a student’s knowledge base in terms of self-defense and combative forms of martial art. Over the years, Kempo-Goju has included other arts, such as aikido, jujitsu and the ancient weapon art of Jodo.

Warren was in law enforcement over 30 years with several police agencies, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, 176th Session.

Kempo-Goju Martial Arts School was established in 1986, and offers expert training in a variety of martial arts disciplines and is located at 110 W. Main St. in Palmyra.

Those interested in attending this class are advised to make a reservation as soon as possible because space is limited. This particular self-defense training is designed only for women attendees.
