A Whitewater man is dead as the result of a single-vehicle crash in the Town of Troy on Sunday, according to the Walworth County Sheriff’s Department.
Richard R. Eckert, 65, was found dead in his 2000 Ford Taurus by first responders shortly before 6 a.m. Deputies were summoned to the accident scene just off Highway 20 near Zimmerman Road at about 5:42 a.m., according to the sheriff’s office. He was the only occupant of the car.
A preliminary investigation indicates that Eckert was traveling east on Highway 20 through a curve when his vehicle struck a guardrail and then caromed across the road several hundred feet before striking a tree. The vehicle was heavily damaged, according to authorities.
An autopsy has been scheduled for this week in an attempt to determine the exact cause of death.
