This is what Whitewater organizers are hoping as a memorial three years in the making officially moves forward.
The Whitewater Common Council last week approved the issuance of a $473,534 contract to Monroe-based E and N Hughes Company for the construction of the Treyton Kilar Field of Dreams baseball stadium near Starin Park.
While the new venue is designed to serve as a community gathering place for sports enthusiasts of all ages, it also memorializes a young boy that brought joy into many hearts.
On Sept. 1, 2010, Treyton Kilar, then 6, died in a car crash. A drunken driver struck the Kilar family’s vehicle near the intersection of Highway 20 and County Highway N. Treyton was an avid fan of the Milwaukee Brewers and loved baseball.
The construction work is coming in lower than the original ballpark figure upwards of $680,000. Volunteer and fundraising efforts have been credited with whittling down the figure.
With council approval officially granted, construction of the new field can get underway. A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for this Friday, Aug. 16. See the Back Page for more information on the event.
Common Council President Patrick Singer said he was pleased the project is moving forward.
“We need to get this done, instead of dragging the Kilar family through another couple of months – or even a year,” Singer said. “I think it is time to finalize it, and I think we showed our commitment.”
