The Friends of the Library will hold its annual summer book sale at the Irvin L. Young Memorial Library, 431 W. Center St. Whitewater.
This year’s sale will feature a large assortment of paperback and hard cover fiction, as well as a wide variety of non-fiction, CDs and DVDs.
The book sale will be held at the library Tuesday, Aug. 6, through Thursday, Aug. 8, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The Friends of the Library is a voluntary, non-profit organization formed to provide support services to the Irvin L. Young Memorial Library. They raise money to sponsor library programs for both adult and children, purchase needed equipment, and contribute to the building expansion fund.
This past year the Friends sponsored speaker Bill Jamerson’s program on Logging in Wisconsin. In May they sponsored the Book-It Race and raised more than $3,000 for the library.
This week they are also funding the young adult trip to Madison on Aug. 1 where a bus load of students who have completed three reading records stops at Barnes & Noble to buy books and then to Ella’s Deli for lunch and a ride on the carousel.
Recently, the Friends bought the 60-inch flat screen TV now located in the community room. It is used as a DVD player for children’s programs, display of video games during YA gaming nights, and can be connected to a computer for guest speakers who need a projector screen.
The group also purchased a yellow display cart, which will soon be seen displaying books read by the library’s many book clubs.
The Friends of the Library raises money through membership dues. They also staff a small “Friends Shop” in the library where a wide selection of used books is available as well as posters, book bags, note cards, book marks, magnifying lens and other reading-related items.
The group organizes two used book sales each year – a small one in the spring and a large one in the summer as major fundraising events.
Volunteers are needed to staff the Friends Shop, set up, staff, and take down the book sales, and to serve as officers and board members. Programming and Web assistance is also needed.
