Photo competition honors one of Whitewater’s most revered artists

The Whitewater Arts Alliance is again seeking submissions for its fourth annual Fran Achen Photography Competition, which runs from July 5-28 at the Cultural Arts Center, 402 W. Main St.

The late Fran Achen is well-known for his Whitewater photography.

“The Fran Achen contest is an excellent opportunity for photographers of all ages to follow in the tradition of artistic excellence established by one of Whitewater’s most revered and respected resident artists,” said Mark McPhail, president of the Whitewater Arts Alliance. “Each year we see an amazing range of subjects and aesthetic perspectives from local and regional photographers, from wildlife to portraiture work, that help to tell this story of this remarkable community and its residents.

“The exhibition is a fitting tribute to a man whom our community remembers not only as a photographer, but as a teacher, a historian, and a friend.”

Fran Achen was a longtime Whitewater resident, teacher and local photographer. However, he is best remembered for his photography collection, which chronicles the history of Whitewater.

Achen died on Jan. 4, 2004 at 87.

To enter

Individuals who wish to submit their photos should complete an entry form and send it to the Whitewater Arts Alliance, P.O. Box 311, Whitewater, WI 53190.

Photos need to be submitted to the Cultural Arts Center from 3-5 p.m. on Monday, June 24, unless other arrangements are made.

Submissions received after this date will be accepted if space allows.

Guidelines, including sizes, formats and entry fees and forms are available at the local banks, the public library and the Whitewater Cultural Arts Center or on the WAA website, www.whitewaterarts.org.

Each photographer may submit up to three photos; however, Whitewater Arts Alliance members may submit a fourth photo for free.

Monetary prizes will be given for Best of Show in the amateur and accomplished adult divisions and youth and teen divisions for first, second and third place.

Awards will be presented at an opening reception at about 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 7.

“This is the fourth year of this show, and we are excited to see the creative photography of area residents. We have been so impressed in the past with the diversity of subject matter, from flowers to foreign travel, from people to places to animals. This is a great opportunity for those with an interest in photography to share their talents,” Arts Alliance member Katherine Conover said.

For those who wish to sell their photos, both the photographers and the Whitewater Arts Alliance will benefit from their creative talents, she said. The Arts Alliance will receive 20 percent of the sale from Whitewater Arts Alliance members and 30 percent from non-members.
