Restored historic details, modern lighting, a new research office, and a new storage facility are all features of Whitewater’s newly restored historic depot building, home to the Whitewater Historical Society’s Depot Museum of Local History on Whitewater Street.
The long-awaited renovation of the building was completed between July and December of 2012 and the Whitewater Historical Society has begun to move its local history collections back into the building.
The $400,000 renovation was funded by a federal grant through the Transportation Enhancement Grants Program, which helps renovate historic transportation-related buildings, and was administered by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the City of Whitewater.
Local matching funds were provided by the City of Whitewater and a fund-raising campaign conducted by the Historical Society.
The Historical Society is planning a grand re-opening event for from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, which will feature a building dedication, music, food, activities, and more.
In the meantime, the building is open on Wednesday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. and the public is welcome to visit.
