Students deliver Thanksgiving staples to residents in need

For about 20 families in Whitewater, Thanksgiving Day started a little early on Nov. 19 in Fellowship Hall at the First United Methodist Church in Whitewater where all the fixings for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner were distributed with a cheery “Happy Thanksgiving.”
“Feeding Whitewater” was a project created by Jason Allmann of Mukwonago, Kory Heck of East Troy and Amber Hinneberge of Port Washington, three UW-Whitewater marketing majors enrolled in Professor Dennis Kopf’s Advanced and Entrepreneurship Sales Techniques course.
Michelle Esser of Eagle, a student attending Waukesha County Technical College, also helped out.
Heck said that he, Allmann, and Hinneberg decided on a project that would give them a chance to connect face-to-face with the people benefiting from their efforts rather than raising money to be donated to an organization aimed at meeting the needs of people.
Heck also said First United Methodist Church was chosen as the location for distribution because of its welcoming spirit associated with the Tuesday lunches it provides to UW-Whitewater students.
Generous support for purchasing the dinner items came from personal sponsorships for $15.
Local corporate sponsors, including Anytime Fitness, Jessica’s Family Restaurant and Banquet Room, Ketterhagen Ford, McCullough’s Pharmacy, Pi Sigma Epsilon, Qdoba Mexican Grill, Rosa’s Pizza, Siege Paintball, Toppers Pizza and the UW-W American Marketing Association, also provided donations or gift cards for raffle prizes for personal donors.
Initial conversations have been held with a UW-W fraternity to make “Feeding Whitewater” an annual event.
