About the book
Drawing upon her personal experience living with her father Bob Sampson, who was born with muscular dystrophy during an era when little was known about the disease, Harkness writes how her father thrived despite the lack of medical knowledge and school systems that were unprepared.
After receiving his law degree, Bob Sampson went on to work for Chicago Mayor Daley in the Corporation Counsel’s Office. He served on an advisory committee for presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford and Carter.
He also appeared on nearly 30 Muscular Dystrophy Association telethons with Jerry Lewis.
While vice president of United Airlines, he became the driving force of change in accessibility for people with disabilities.
Sampson spent his life overcoming obstacles and reaching goals that most would find intimidating, all while changing the lives of countless others.
Harkness earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb and completed her transition specialist degree from UW-Whitewater.
She has more than 30 years experience working with children and adults with disabilities.
Co-author Richard Lombard earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from UW-Eau Claire and received his PhD. in Rehabilitation Psychology from UW-Madison.
Lombard taught at UW-Whitewater for 27 years and has authored several books on the topic of special education.
Books will be available for purchase for $16.95.
