Hay bales come alive at Busy Barns
Busy Barns Adventure Farm in Fort Atkinson has turned round hay bales into art, giving people driving by something to smile about.
“The hay art all started four years ago when we stacked three round bales like a pyramid and painted them orange,” said Mary Telfer, farm owner. “We hand-painted silly pumpkin faces on them for our farm’s new fall season. Cars with children were constantly pulling over and getting out to pose by the big bales for family pictures. Passersby told us how seeing the round bales made them smile every time they drove by.”
Busy Barns Farm is located on Highway 12 just west of Fort Atkinson.
Telfer said being on a major highway provides lots of traffic and the round bales have definitely drawn some attention to their adventure farm.
“The bales are really fun to do, but they take a lot of creativity and work to put together,” she said.
Busy Barns doesn’t just create one bale a season, it has multiple displays scattered around the farm.
“Last fall a giant black spider protected the entrance to the farm, this autumn a friendly Frankenstein will greet our guests as they enter,” said Telfer. “In addition, there is an adorable round bale honeybee inside the farm.”
Each season Busy Barns teaches a different topic on agriculture.
Last fall, staff educated visitors on how swine are divine. This season the learning focus is honeybees.
“The bee bale is one of the fun photo spots to bring awareness to this important insect,” Telfer said.
