The University of Wisconsin-Extension is hosting a soil health training event from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, at C&C Farms, near W6322 Willow Bend Rd. in Walworth.
The training will provide an overview of basic soil health concepts, the economics of soil health, cover crops, and how to promote soil health practices.
In addition, thanks to grant funding, attendees will receive a soil health testing kit and will learn how to measure soil health on their own farms. The training will include a presentation on the impacts compaction and crops have on root growth below the surface, a demonstration of how to use their soil health testing kit to compare soil health in different fields and a rainfall simulation.
The kit includes a soil compaction probe, soil infiltration test, soil aggregation stability (slake) test, digital soil thermometer and other resources to help participants learn how to improve soil health on their farm.
Those planning to attend must register by noon on Oct. 11. The training is $30 and includes lunch and a soil health kit. Space is limited and priority will be given to those farming or managing land in and around the 9-Key Element Watersheds.
