Community garden plots available

The University of Wisconsin-Extension has plots available to rent at the Walworth County Community Garden.

Community gardens provide common ground for people to grow plants, build strong communities, and provide the space needed for a garden, according to the UW-Extension. Some benefits of gardening include raising fresh produce and saving money, learning new gardening skills, getting exercise, and unwinding, said Chrissy Wen, UW-Extension horticulture educator.

“A community garden offers people of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels a chance to learn together,” Wen said. “Vegetable gardening is really fun, and each year is a whole new learn- ing opportunity. We encourage families to get involved. Gardens are a space for chil- dren and adults to learn together.”

The Walworth County Community Gardens are on the south side of County Road NN west of Lakeland School and across the street from the Lakeland Health Care Center. Four plot sizes are available – 20 by 30 feet for $35; 20 by 20 feet for $25; 10 by 20 feet for $15 and raised beds for $10.

The garden plots will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Water is available at the garden, and plots will be tilled prior to the opening weekend. Weather permitting, the garden will be open around mid-May. The land for the Walworth County Community Garden is provided by Walworth County.
