Crash data recorder indicates teen was traveling 91 mph before Alden Road crash
An Illinois teenager made an initial court appearance and signed a $25,000 signature bond May 10 on charges stemming from a crash in Walworth that injured a passenger in the car she was driving and put four other teenagers in danger.
Sydney A. Dworak, 17, of Harvard, Ill., was charged March 9 in Walworth County Circuit Court with second-degree reckless injury and five counts of second-degree recklessly endangering safety.
According to the criminal complaint, Dworak was driving a car with five friends as passengers when the vehicle became airborne on Alden Road in Walworth and overturned, landing on its roof. Dworak was 16 years old at the time of the crash as were two of the passengers. The two other passengers were 15 years old.
A 15-year-old girl, who is now 16, suffered a broken back and broken collar bone and underwent surgery at Rockford Memorial Hospital, according to the complaint.
A 15-year-old boy who was a passenger said the teenagers were on a really hilly road by Walworth going really fast when they hit a hill, “got some air” and crashed, according to the complaint. He said everyone got out of the vehicle except the 15-year-old girl who was lying outside facedown in some grass.
The girl said before the crash, the 15-year-old boy was laughing and yelled, “Bet you can’t hit 120,” according to the complaint.
The crash data recorder from the car indicated the vehicle was traveling 91 mph 2.5 seconds before the crash, according to the complaint.
When police arrived at the scene, Dworak was hysterical, would scream out every few seconds and said things like, “Did anyone die?” and “I don’t know what happened,” according to the complaint. She told police she thought she was going about 45 mph at the time of the crash.
