Multiple families were displaced after a fire broke out at a complex in Williams Bay Saturday night.

According to the Williams Bay Fire Department Facebook page, Williams Bay Fire and Rescue was dispatched at 7:12 p.m. on Saturday for a report from a resident at 20 Olive St., Williams Bay, of smoke coming from the basement of the building.

The post states upon arrival, Chief 3601 immediately requested mutual aid response from Town of Delavan Fire. When Town of Delavan Fire arrived, the post said the immediately rescued a resident from a second story balcony while also performing fire attack.

The post said the fire chief requested the MABAS alarm be moved to the second alarm.

The post said a working fire was found in the building and extinguished by fire crews.

According to the Facebook page, one person was transported from the scene with smoke inhalation and multiple families were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Janette Maxwell, owner of Daddy Maxwell’s at 150 Elkhorn Road, almost directly across from the apartment building, posted on the restaurant’s Facebook account that the restaurant is collecting money to cover the cost of the hotel bill it took upon itself to put residents of the complex up for the time being. Cash donations can be made at the restaurant.

“Always proud to serve a local community who cares about those in need,” the Williams Bay Fire Department posted on its Facebook page Tuesday. “A special thank you to Daddy Maxwell’s for stepping up without a second thought to assist those in need.”

The occupancy was equipped with functional smoke detectors, something which the posts said made a significant difference in the safety of the occupants of the building.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
