The Walworth County Council of the American Legion has prepared and delivered certificates of commendation to each of the 17 police departments in Walworth County.
The Village of Sharon Police Department was awarded a certificate of commendation on Jan. 9.
The certificates recognize the dramatic rise in shootings and other attacks and the dangerous, misunderstood and under-appreciated work police officers do, said Bob Miller, council commander. The Legion launched the commendation program to make the public more aware of the important role police play in their everyday lives.
The certificate of commendation reads: “This commendation is awarded for outstanding public service benefiting our community, state and nation.” Miller said the announcement of the program coincided with the first national Law Enforcement Appreciation Day across the country.
The Walworth County Council is asking every Legionnaire to make a greater effort to convey their gratitude to police officers they meet with waves, handshakes, toots of the horn and other friendly greetings. Miller also suggested the public do likewise and make an effort to become better acquainted with their local police.
One of the Legion members working on the project said he was reminded of the old adage to the effect: “It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.”
Walworth County has 10 American Legion posts that meet monthly as the Walworth County Council at the various posts. The next meeting is Monday at Post 95 in Delavan at which time the Walworth County American Legion Oratorical Contest will take place.
