Seven escape multi-unit residence on Elm Street
A multi-unit residence on Elm Street in Lake Geneva was destroyed Tuesday in a fire.
Lake Geneva Police officers were called to the 1100 block of Elm Street at about 11:41 a.m. on Tuesday for a report of a structure fire.
Lake Geneva Police Chief Michael Rasmussen said the structure was engulfed in flames and two adults and an infant were trapped on the roof in the rear of the residence.
As smoke was starting to overcome the trapped residents, the mother threw the infant from the roof to an officer, who caught the infant unharmed, Rasmussen said.
A person provided officers with a small ladder to help the last female off the roof, though the ladder broke and the female fell uninjured onto the officers. Rasmussen said one officer was injured and treated at Lakeland Medical Center.
Four other residents escaped from the first floor of the residence and of the seven in the building at the time of the fire, three were kept overnight for treatment and observation, according to Rasmussen, and are expected to make a full recovery.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.
